Common Nettle | Urtica dioica

England, January 2018

Detailed, internal sounds from a dead nettle stalk, recorded on the edge of a deciduous copse in the Cotswolds.

Following a period of ice and snow, I found this plant dead and for the most part leafless in mid-January. I chose the longest stalk I could find (approximately 1m in length) and attached a couple of contact microphones as it vibrated in strong gusts.

The low-frequency content and range of subtle textures in the recording are remarkable.
