Common Starlings | Sturnus vulgaris

Northern Ireland, May 2015

A close-up recording of a common starling nest, situated behind guttering at the edge of a village bungalow roof. The microphone was positioned from the underside at a 45-degree angle, facing the nest at a distance of about 20cm.

Both adults flew back and forth throughout the recording, feeding their noisy young with worms and other small invertebrates. My presence was met with emphatic warning calls from the outset, and I stood for several minutes before backing off and leaving the family in peace.
