A great spotted woodpecker, briefly drumming on an exposed beech limb in a Cotswold wood.
Bark damage from earlier woodpecker activity was clearly visible on the branch chosen by the bird, which was obviously a favourite 'drumming spot'. I made the recording after rushing across a large field to the south of the forest, having heard the sound as I approached from a distance.
Several other woodpeckers had previously been active in the surrounding area.
